WEEK TWO SUMMARY

LECTURE SUMMARY:

APPLICATIONS SKILLS:
In this weeks lecture we opened with four questions regarding how much we know and have learnt so far in regards to computers.The lecturer then answered the questions and then we talked about application skills. It therefore makes sense that skills in using PCs and their related applications are an essential part of modern society.
Some PC tasks include:
PC TASKS:
-File handling
-word processing
-spreadsheets
-presentations
-Internet access

Applications:
-windows explorer
-microsoft word
-microsoft excel
-microsoft powerpoint
-Internet explorer

SUMMARY:

In the lecture we were taken through a detailed outline of the web through the powerpoint slideshow and we weere introduced to many new sites and applications we had not since been made aware of since university. This lecture summary has also opened us up to the variety of aspplocation skills available out there and how important it is to know those skills.

TUTORIAL SUMMARY WEEK TWO

ACTIVITY ONE:

WORD EXERCISE

In this weeks tutorial we had two main exercises. The first exercise was a word exercise where we had to go into microsoft word and make changes to a piece of writing following set instructions.

ACTIVITY TWO:

EXCEL EXERCISE:

For the second part of the tutorial we had to open an excel document and create a spreadsheet according to the instructions on blackboard.

WEEK TWO READING ONE SUMMARY:

USING COMPUTERS FOR APA TASKS:

Microsoft Word Computer Functions:

Backspace and delete:

The computer keyboard has two delete functions backspace and delete. When using the backspace button you simply direct the curser to the word you want to backspace and then push the backspace button until the word or words are gone. When using the delete button you have to highlight the word or phrase by clicking on the mouse and dragging it across and you will know that it has worked when the word is highlighted in black and then you simply push the delete button and the word will disappear.

Typerface(Fonts):

Font is the style you use when you write something either an essay for school or a report for your boss when you move into the workforce. The font button should already be present on the toolbar and you click the small arrow on the right hand side and scroll down until you find the font you want.

Margins:

Margins used in the APA style are 1 inch all around the paper and they help keep your work in line on the page so that it is there when you print.

Page Headers:

Page headers appear at the top of the page next to the margins and in APA form a page number is automatically marked at the bottom of each page.

Use Document Comments:

When you are writing up an assignment add in a document coment box so that your lecturer and tutor are able to give some feedback on your work and acknowledge your good points and assist you where you have gone wrong. It is also a good idea to add a document comment box so you yourself can honestly comment your own work.

SUMMARY:

Reading one contains vital information for people that are in the computing business or people wishing to go into the computing business in the future. It is important to understand how to use computers for APA tasks as computers today are vital in business if you wish to succeed.

WEEK TWO READING TWO SUMMARY:

GRAPHIC FILE FORMATS:

BITMAP(BMPs):

-BMPs are used to save images in PCs

-BMPs are also useful when wanting to save an uimage and use it as wallpape for your computer.

CompuServe(GIFs):

GIF is the process you use when you want to minimise time saving files over the phone. GIF is also the process you use when you want to display images on screen and show animation techniques. The issue of transperancy of an image is also controlled by the GIF format which entails saving an image on netspace rather than internet explorer this brings the image through in a slow process so quality is controlled.

Joint Photographic Experts Group(JPEG):

JPEG like GIF displays images on the internet, however unlike GIF the JPEG dial through rab is able to retain all the colour of the image so that the image is of the highest quality. However the fault in the JPEG program is that it saves the file by a process of compression so while the file is saving a fraction of the image and even the text are lost so your work is of a good quality image wise but is half finished text wise. When saving in the JPEG format you can specify how fast or slow you weant the file to travel. This is good because it means the higher the compression the faster the image travels but there is a downside because the faster the image the poorer the picture quaslity so it pays to take the time to get an image of a higher quality than to save time and get barely no image at all.

Tagged-Image file format(Tiff):

Tiff is the process used to switch computer files between applications and computer platforms due to the fact that these files ccan be read by mackintosh and ibm pcs. The Tiff file can also transfer images from one file to the other while still keeping high image quality.

Photoshop Document(PSD)

All prior images discussed are flat images which means they are not reliable, the psd format is layered which means that it is of a better quality and is able to support more images. When thinking of layered image format it is like having a picture on a sheet of paper then a sheet of paper with text underneath. Layered images ususlly result as the end product.

SUMMARY:The second reading has clearly displayed the importance of all the graphic file formats available on the internet and how easy it makes operating the computer if you know how to use all those different formats if you use computers in your job or if you are studying computers as a subject at school.
