Part One: Online Libraries:
Why Use Online Libraries:
Online libraries have a number of advantages that attract people towards them. Firstly as the name suggests they are accesable on the internet which means that people can search online libraries in the comfort of their own homes with a drink in their hand relaxing, rather than getting in the car and travelling to their local library to search through shelves and shelves of books. Secondly online libraries carry the most recently updated online journal articles which once you access therm you can simply print them off.
Disadvantages of Online Libraries:
The majority of the content on online libraries is hidden and unaccessable which means that even if you did access the online library you probably couldn't get hold of any good informnation. Secondly most online libraries are not even accessable ion the internet so you wouldn't even be able to access them.
Types Of Online Libraries:
Online texts
online journals
electronic books
musical
Artwork
Limitations of Online Libraries:
Generally with online libraries only the catalogue is available which means further search
If you want to access information on online databases you have to pay a certain amount to access a certain amount of information. Thirdly online libraries are rarely updated.
Referencing Online Libraries:
Referencing is vital for university life and life in general as it shows that you havn't stol;en someones words as this is theft and can incur serious penalties. To ensure acurate referencing:
Use APA format
create endnote
make sure the quantity is sensible as this is also checked.
Copyright Issues:
Proper referencing of sources
Most libraries have a copyright source
In the end it is your responsibility of ensuring you have done the work properly so as not to incur any penalties.
SUMMARY:
This lecture for week three was extremely crucial in our learning at this university. This lecture taught us how to use the library when we need to search for something for an assignment or find something that is located on the library computers. This lecture has also opened our eyes to the importance of referencing sources and has made us aware of how crucial this will be to our university life in the future.
TUTORIAL ACTIVITY ONE:
Searching the Edith Cowan University Library:
In this weeks tutorial we had to search the ecu online library and find an article on global warming using the online journal of the ecu library. We then had to list 10 useful search tips in detailed explaination that we got off the ecu library.
Search Tips/Functions:
1.Efficiency of the library homepage:
The library homepage as soon as you get on it has all the resources available right there straight away. All the information you need to access is just a mouse click away.
2. Extensive variety of information:
There are a number of online journals or journal databases located on the library that when you click into them and list the keywords of yor search all possible most recently uopdated articles are available to you.
3.Book Search:
Traditionally in the old libraries when computers were just coming of age if you wanted to search for a book all you had to go on was the dewy number and then you had to search shelves and shelves of books. Today with the luxury of online libraries you type in a keyword eg genetics and all the books available in the library on that topic come up and also the dewy numbers. Whether the books are available for hire wil be made apparent on the screen and then you continue the search according to that information.
4.Currency of journals:
The online journals on the ecu library are updated by experts and proffessionals almost always on a daily basis so the information is current.
5. Book Checkups:
Once you've hired out a book you can go back and regularly check up on the due date to make sure you will get the book in on time abnd to see how much time you still have.
6.Search Specification:
When you search for something on the online library you don't need to exactly to the last word specify what you are looking for the range of the library is so large that a few words here and there are enough.
7.Visual pictures of your time:
Once you have hired out books you can go back and see on the online library what they contain inside them in a nutshell if you don't want to search through pages and pages to find information if you are on a time limit.
8.Catagorised searching:
On the online libraries the books and other information are sorted by faculty eg business and law faculty. This makes it easy when you are looking for a book depending on what you study to click in straight away and find books to do with law or communications instead of searching through piles and piles and wasting hours on end tryuing to locate one law book.
9.Online help services:
As soon as you log onto the ecu library you will see the words help services. If you are having trouble you click into this sight follow the links and your problem is solved straight away. This is in contrast to physical libraries where there is rarelty anyone available when you need help and if there is it may take copius amounts of time to solve a problem when you could have been studying for your exams or finishing a crucial assignment.
10. Reference Inquiry:
The ecu online library page has a link that says reference inquiry which helps you if you are having problems with referencing which is a crucial part of university assignments. If a problem arose with your referencing and you were at home it would be easy just to log on to the computer and get help from the online library in contrast to in the olden days when the internet was a mere idea and physical libraries were more popular it would be very hard to get help with referencing in a situation like that.
SUMMARY:
This first tutorial activity has helped to open the doors of the Edith Cowan University library and has shown us how vital it is to us succeeding at university and making sure all our work is done to a high standard.
TUTORIAL ACTIVITY TWO:
Medline Plus website and it's importance:
The second part of our tutorial for this week was to go on the medline plus site and search all the information on drugs both legal and illegal and then write down who we think would benefit from such a site.
Who would benefit from medline plus:
The three groups of people I think would benefit most from medline plus would be
doctors, the families of people who are ill and the families of those people addicted to drugs.
Doctors:
The medline plus site would benefit doctors when their patients were sick with a disease such as cancer. Doctors would need to research on sites such as metaquest to see which drugs the patient could take to reduce the pain and have the most minute side effects. The metaquest site would contain this information in great detail.
Families of people who are sick:
If someone was suffering from cancer particularly a child then the family of that child would want to find out as much information as possible about the disease and what would help the child suffer less pain. For this reason metaquest would be a good sight because by typing in one key word you could find pages and pages of information on several drugs that could help their chid. They would of course have to run through this with their doctor if they did find a drug to make sure it was safe.
Families of people suffering drug addiction:
When someone is suffering from a drug addiction it is the hardest thing to sit by and know that you are helpless as their family. The first step to doing somethingf before making them go to rehab would be to find out as much about that particular drug as you can and metaquest would be the best site for this purpose. Metaquest has pages and pages of information on illicit drugs such as heroin, canabis, cocaine and many more illegal drugs. It would be the family's first port of call even before going to a doctor or councillor.
SUMMARY:
This second tutorial has helped to show the importance of websites that provide any information in regards to medical issues whether it is to benefit a doctor or to help someone understand what has caused them to be sick or what has caused their family members to be sick. The medline plus site is an extremely informative and helpful site.
WEEK THREE READING ONE:
FINDING WHAT YOU WANT ON THE WEB
Searching a variety of internet sites:
It is important not to stick to internat sites that you are so familiar with that you use to find everything for example google and yahoo. The internet is full to the brim with educational sites and google and yahoo only make up 20% of these internet sites. People are drawn towards google and yahoo because all you nedd to do is type in http://www.google/ or yahoo and the site autimatically comes up and it even stores the site in the computer so you don't even need to type just click on the mouse. Other sites carry a variety of information that is of a higher quality than anything you would find on google. Some of these sites include:
Mozilla firefox
encyclopedia brotanica
wikepedia.
If you search these sites you will find adequate amounts of information on any topic you desire.
Wide Ranging Web Indicies:
The web is a big wide span of information that contains an uncountable number of sites, however the fact remains that google is just too popular and that it is too widely used particularly by the teenage population when wanting to find information for any other sites to be used. The fact that it is easily accessable does not stack in favour of the other sites either.
Searching Well:
To search the web well you have to put in a number of long hours and even then it is still hard to find sitews with any educational value. However their are those sites with a wide variety of information that are easily accessed.
SUMMARY:
This activity has opened succeeded in showing how big the web is and how much information it contains. It is important to know how to properly search the web do you can find things quickly.
WEEK THREE READING TWO BARE BONES LESSON 7:
