WEEK ONE SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION TO LIFE AT UNIVERSITY:

In our first lecture for the term we began with an introduction to computers, some different programs contained in computers and their mportance in helping us become efficient uni students when we enter our degrees. The first aspect of computers we were introduced to were unit materials contained on the ecu site that would as we enter university life make our study much more easier.

COMPUTER MATERIALS:

The computer materials we were introduced to included the most recent ones used by ECU.
The first one we were introduced to was blackboard.

BLACKBOARD:

Blackboard is the place where students at ecu go to access most of their information. Located on blackboard are our timetables and most importantly our lecture noters which we can access and print off at any stage and our tutorial worksheets which are vital for university if we want to complete all our work to a high standard. Another important aspect of blackboard is the student email. Our student email is where we are sent updates from our lecturers and tutors regarding any changes or updates that we need to be made aware of and also anty other important information from other uni officials regarding announcements about the student guild or any other important information.

The next unit material we were introduced to on the computer was SIMMO.

SIMMO:

Simmo is the place where our uni schedules are located and also useful information regarding the books we require for our courses. On simmo also is information regarding the bookshop and how we get our books.

Another computing application we were introduced to was how to locate student services on the computer. Student services is the place we go to if we are having minor problems and we need assistance.

We were then given a rundown of some non-computing aspects that are vital to university success. The main one we were introduced to was the edith cowan university library.

NON- COMPUTING RESOURCES

THE LIBRARY:

A non-computing resource is the library. In the library you are able to hire out a variety of different books on a wide range of subjects depending on what you study at university or just for some interesting background reading.

The library is the university's largest non electronic resource. The library contains an enormous amount of books that serve a wide range of purposes. The library is the heart and soul of university, however today with the world's best computer technology at our fingers more and more students are drifting away from the library preferring to stay in the comfort of their own homes and be able to access all their work on websites such as GOOGLE. Although upc0004 is centred around comoputer technology, in today's lecture we were made aware that the internet is not always the most reliable source as anyone can add their own information on different topics and some websites are very rarely updated and for these reasons we were advised to always use the library and hard copy books as one of the focal sources of finding information and then if the library fails us to then turn to the internet.

The last aspect of today's first lecture was an introduction to basic computing.

BASIC COMPUTING:

Intoday's lecture we wre introduced to Pcs or personal computers we were told they have become a necessity to function successfully in today's fast pace world. Pcs have become a necessity for
-Business
-our own productiveness as human beings
-leisure- if we want to book holiday's we don't even have to drive to a travel agent we can sit
and book in the comfort of our own homes thanks to computer technology.

COMPUTERS AND STUDENTS:

In today's lecture we were told that as undergraduate students living in the 21st century where knowing how to use the latest tecnology is just as important as breathing it is not possible to not have access to a computer otherwise surviving at university is not going to happen.
We were told that it will take time to become accustomed to using all the programs the computer had to offer and it will be frustrating at first but once we get the hang of using the comoputers they will become our best friends at university and we will be pros.

SUMMARY:

At the end of our first lecture we were told to just work hard at this course so we get accepted into our desired degrees and to enjoy university life as it is a once in a lifetime experience.

TUTORIAL ACTIVITY WEEK ONE:
In our first tutorial activity for the semester we had to set up a blog account where we would spend the rest of the semester recording all our lecture notes and our tutorial activities that we completed a long with readings we had to complete in every lecture. We set up our blog accounts by logging onto www.blogger.com and from there followed the prompts to set up our own personal blogs.

SUMMARY:

The first week of this class has set up the fouindations for the next 13 weeks by setting up our blog accounts.

WEEK ONE READING SUMMARY ONE: PC LUBE AND TUBE:

An Introduction to PC Hardware:

The Most Commmon Problems Are Simple: Backup Your Files:

It is so easy to lose files on the computer as every disk or even normal file will run out. To prevent losing important documents for school or work save them before you even begin writing to an external USB harddrive so incase of losing files you know they are saved and you can access them on your usb.

Malware:

Many computers become the victims of computer viruses and one this happens people go off and buy new computers without even trying to fix the old ones this is not an economical solution. When you buy a computer make sure you buy real software and go home and set uop the comoputer and folow the instructions to install the software so when a virus strikes you can save your well equipped old computer instead of wasting money on a brand new one.

SUMMARY:

This reading one has given an insight into how PCs work and why they are so important to us especially today when technology and being able to use it has become so important.

WEEK ONE READING SUMMARY TWO:

HOW STUFF WORKS:

How PCs Work:

In this day and age everyone's head is bogged in with information regarding compters however no one stops to consider personal computers or PCs. A pc is a general purpose tool built around a microcompressor and a pc has many functions. PCs are general purpose which means that they possess lots of functions. You can use a pc to type in microsoft word, search the internet and play games.

SUMMARY:
Reading two how stuff works is vital to understanding the importance of computers and why we depend on them so much especially in the 21st century. Computers are a necessity in this day and age and understanding them is vital to succeeding in such a modernised world.
